The latest barcode label printers from Citizen Systems Europe are now available with VCOM (Virtual Communications Port) functionality, eliminating the complex, time consuming and costly programming required to allow computers to communicate effectively with printers using USB drivers.

VCOM enables existing IT systems to be adapted for use with the latest printing technology simply and cost effectively, making it possible to optimise productivity levels without a major investment in programming resources and new hardware.

With PC hardware now typically supplied with USB ports only, rather than RS232 serial ports, a considerable amount of programming is generally required to achieve effective bi-directional communication between PCs and printers, especially with legacy applications. While it may be possible to obtain extremely basic printer information on screen, more detailed information on the specific status of the printers is no longer obtainable without a considerable amount of time, money and resources.

VCOM overcomes this problem by using a special function in the printer and small software driver on the PC to create a virtual RS232 port on the PC. This enables the programmer to use traditional and well-known methods in applications like Visual Basic 6 (VB6) to talk to the printer, enabling the detailed level of information that could previously be exchanged between PC and printer to be retained. As a result, corrective action can be taken on specific warning messages, minimising downtime and streamlining processes.

The VCOM functionality is currently available with Citizen’s CLP 521, CLP 621, CLP 631 and CL‑S700 printers, making the technology suitable for a diverse range of applications.
